Walt Disney Company has taken legal action in a Los Angeles state court to stop YouTube from hiring Justin Connolly as its global head of media and sports. Disney claims that Connolly is contractually required to stay with them until at least March 1, 2027, based on an agreement signed in November 2024. Alleging breach of contract, unfair competition, and interference with a contractual relationship, Disney is seeking both preliminary and permanent injunctions to prevent Connolly's move to YouTube, Reuters reported.
Connolly recently resigned from his role as Disney's head of platform distribution after over two decades with Disney and ESPN. His new position at YouTube involves steering media relationships and spearheading its live-sports initiatives. YouTube has been rapidly expanding its sports streaming services, highlighted by a major $14 billion deal with the NFL in 2022, signaling its challenge to giants like Netflix and Amazon. The platform continues to grow its live TV, music, and podcast services, contributing significantly to its advertising revenue.
As of now, YouTube has not provided any comments regarding the lawsuit. The case underscores the competitive tensions in the media landscape as major players vie for talent to bolster their streaming and media operations.
