Google is reportedly planning to develop its own Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) by 2027 in a bid to reduce costs associated with its AI infrastructure. This potential shift is significant as Google has been relying on Broadcom to supply and assist in the design and manufacturing of these chips since 2016, according to The Information.
Currently, Google estimates that moving TPU production in-house could save the company billions of dollars each year. This change seems to be part of a broader industry trend, where other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft are also working on developing their own AI chips to reduce dependence on external suppliers, as reported by The Decoder.
While Google is considering bringing TPU development under its own roof, it continues to explore collaborations with other companies like MediaTek to find cost-effective solutions for its AI chips. This strategic move is expected to enable Google to have more control over their AI hardware and optimize their infrastructure for efficiency and cost savings.
