Uber and Volkswagen have forged a strategic partnership to bring autonomous ID. Buzz minivans to Uber's ride-hailing platform. This collaboration intends to integrate thousands of these electric vehicles across several U.S. cities, marking a significant step in Uber's push towards autonomous transportation.
The initiative will kick off with an initial deployment in Los Angeles, with trials expected in 2025, leading to a commercial launch in 2026. During the initial phase, the vehicles will feature safety drivers to monitor operations. According to Electrek, MOIA, Volkswagen AG's autonomous mobility brand, will be responsible for providing the autonomous vehicle technology.
Volkswagen's autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles are tailored differently from consumer models, potentially accommodating up to four passengers along with luggage. The partnership aims to integrate these robotaxis with Uber's traditional fleet of human-driven cars. As part of its long-term vision, Volkswagen plans to extend its autonomous vehicle services to 50 cities in North America and Europe by 2030.
